Know Your Neighbourhood – Whitefield, Bangalore

Whitefield, located in East Bangalore, is a major IT hub in the state of Karnataka. Originally established as a settlement for Eurasians and Anglo Indians, Whitefield remained a quiet green locality until the 1990s when the IT boom saw it being transformed into a major suburb. Whitefield comes under the purview of BBMP. Some surrounding areas include Brookfield, Hoodi, Kadugodi and Varthur.

Real Estate

The average price of apartments in Whitefield is about Rs 4,200 per sqft with prices varying between Rs 3,500 and Rs 7,500 per sq ft. Average land prices are between Rs 4,000 to Rs 10,000 per sq ft.

Connectivity

Two major four-lane roads connect Bangalore city with Whitefield. The Whitefield Road via Mahadevapura and Varthur road (Old Airport road) via Marathahalli. Both intersect with Karnataka State Highway 35 (SH-35) which runs in the north-south direction. Whitefield has very good road connectivity with BMTC buses plying a variety of services in the locality. A Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC) in EPIP is functional with schedules connecting it to most parts of the city. Air-conditioned Volvo buses are also available for transport.

The Whitefield railway station, situated on the Bangalore-Chennai route, is located about 3kms north of Whitefield Bus Stop and is double and electrified. There is a proposal to make the Krishnarajapuram-Whitefield section into a quadruple line. The station will become a junction when the new 53km-long Whitefield-Kolar line is completed. Major trains passing through the area includes the Mysore-Howrah Express, the Chennai Express, the Tirupati Passenger and the Kanyakumari Express. Trains passing through Whitefield leave from Bangalore City Junction.

The Bangalore International Airport is 50kms away from Whitefield.

Social Infrastructure

Whitefield houses many IT Parks, business spaces and restaurants. Whitefield is home to many IT and ITES companies like Accenture, Capgemini, Dell, GE, Oracle, SAP Labs, TCS, iGate, HCL, Perot Systems, Intel, and Wipro among others. Hindustan Lever Research Centre (Unilever) and Padmini Industries are among the leading industries located here. The locality boasts various shopping malls like Forum Value Mall, Phoenix Market City, Park Square Mall and Inobrit Mall.

Education

Whitefield boasts several good schools and colleges. Some of the schools in the area include Narayana e-Techno, Vydehi School of Excellence, and Whitefield Global School. Vydehi College of Nursing, MVJ College of Engineering, Government Polytechnic, Sri Sathya Sai Arts and Science College are among the many colleges here.

Hospitals

Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences is a super specialty hospital renowned for offering free medical services. Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre is another super-specialty hospital here.
